Potter's Creek Park, Canyon Lake, TX

This White Tail buck (Bill's picture, note the grass in his mouth) and the Egyptian Goose in the next picture are the first visitors we met our first night at Potter's Creek Park (US Army Corps of Engineers park) on Canyon Lake, near New Braunfels, TX. We're in Hill Country and Canyon Lake is a reservoir formed by the damning of the Guadalupe River. It's a bit low right now but still quite pretty and winter is the quiet time of year here and one reason the deer are so plentiful in our midst.

The friendliness of the deer..... not even Mango and Pearl can discourage them altogether though the dogs do make them a little nervous....has surprised us and they do run off a bit but not far and then they're back again. This Egyptian Goose was one of three that flew in looking for a hand out. Come to find out some people visiting the park feed corn to the deer and any other animal who wants to feed; another reason for their attendance.

This is the view from our camp site. We're the only ones in this section of the campground so it's very quiet.

Just after setting up....and just to give our flexibility some practice I'm sure.... a camp worker came by to tell us the water to our part of the campground was to be shut off since during the recent freezes the pipes froze and burst to the bathhouse in our area. Would we like to move? he asked. 'No'. So we filled up our fresh water tank, use as little as we can out of it and walk a little farther to another bathhouse. One move a day is enough.

We counted well over 20 deer, including 4 bucks, one of them an 8 point.
