On the Road Again: Canyon Lake, TX, February 2010

As I sit and watch the Olympics we're just about to wrap up our stay at Randolph Air Force Rec. Area on Canyon Lake. It's been a rather quiet month with lots of cool and rainy winter weather. We've been hiking every day and making occasional trips into Austin to see Emile, Stacy, Owen and Eve. This picture of Eve and Owen was taken at Emile and Stacy's.

On another day out at the Lake it rained and rained and rained...a day to just hunkered down. It's good we like to read and didn't have to go anywhere. Here you can see the new creek that formed outside our window.

One of the few clear days we've had....and they've been so nice....this is the view of the lake from the road up by our camper. Because of all the rain this winter the lake level has risen dramatically just since we've been camping here on the lake...a month and a half.

This little fellow(fella) is a Townsend's Ground Squirrel and they live in and around the rocks down by the lake. During the day you can see them scampering around. This one bravely peeked over the rock as I walked by.

Bill & I thought this sign near the turn off to Canyon Dam was pretty funny.

These are Axis deer which we found on a wander around Hill Country; they are imported deer from India, brought to Texas by hunting ranches for their patrons, as I understand it. You can maybe see that the buck's antlers are in velvet and they all have spots, not just the young.

Just down the road from the deer the road crossed over/though the creek. These crossings are ubiquitous around here and can become impassible during times of heavy rain...you just have to wait until the water recedes...it's part of the charm of the area. We had no trouble crossing here.

These Longhorn cattle were pleasantly arranged in this pasture and didn't seem to mind being photographed at all. They must be beautifully cared for with their shiny coats....
